The idea

Why interchange-plus is more transparent

Interchange-plus pricing separates the cost you cannot control (interchange and assessments set by the card networks) from your processor’s markup. Because the markup is stated plainly, it is easy to compare and usually lower than a flat or tiered rate at steady volume.

Step by step

How to use this calculator

1

Enter your monthly card volume

The total dollars you run through cards in a month.

2

Enter your average ticket

This sets how many transactions the per-sale assessment applies to.

3

Enter the processor markup

The percentage a provider adds over interchange. Lower is better.

How it works

How interchange-plus is calculated

Your cost has two parts. The first is interchange and assessments, which go to the card networks and the issuing bank and are the same for everyone. The second is your processor’s markup, a fixed percentage and sometimes a per-transaction fee. Add them and you have your effective rate.

The formula

  • Cost = volume × (interchange + markup) + per-transaction fees
  • Effective rate = cost ÷ volume

Interchange averages around 1.8% but varies by card type and how you accept the card. See your true blended number with the processing fee calculator.

Go further

Interchange-plus vs dual pricing

Interchange-plus trims your cost by making markup transparent. Dual pricing removes most of the cost entirely, because card-paying customers cover it.

What is interchange-plus pricing?
It is a pricing model that charges you the actual interchange and assessment cost plus a clearly stated processor markup. Because the markup is transparent, it is easy to compare and usually cheaper than flat or tiered pricing at volume.
What is a good interchange-plus markup?
Markups commonly range from about 0.2% to 0.5% plus a small per-transaction fee. Lower is better, but the right number depends on your volume and card mix.
What are interchange fees?
Interchange is the base fee set by Visa and Mastercard and paid to the bank that issued the card. It averages around 1.8% and no processor can discount it.
Is interchange-plus cheaper than flat rate?
Usually, yes, at steady volume, because you are not paying a blended markup on every sale. The calculator compares your estimated interchange-plus cost to a typical flat rate.
Can I pay even less than interchange-plus?
Yes. With dual pricing, card-paying customers cover the processing cost, so your out-of-pocket fee drops close to $0.
