What is PCI compliance?
PCI compliance means following the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, a set of rules that protect cardholder data. Any business that accepts cards must meet these standards, which cover how you store, process, and transmit card numbers. The goal is to reduce fraud and data breaches. Compliance involves securing your systems, limiting who can access card data, and validating your setup each year. ProTech guides you through the requirements so you stay compliant without sorting through technical jargon alone.
What is an SAQ?
An SAQ, or Self-Assessment Questionnaire, is the form most small and mid-sized merchants complete each year to validate PCI compliance. It is a checklist about how you handle card data, and the version you fill out depends on how you accept payments. A business using a secure hosted gateway answers a shorter SAQ than one that touches card numbers directly. ProTech tells you which SAQ applies to your setup and walks you through completing it correctly.
How do I keep my PCI status current?
PCI compliance is validated each year, usually through a Self-Assessment Questionnaire and, for some setups, a network scan. ProTech walks you through your SAQ step by step and keeps your encryption and tokenization current, so your account stays validated and your customer card data stays protected year after year.
How do encryption and tokenization protect data?
Encryption scrambles card data as it travels so it cannot be read if intercepted, while tokenization replaces the real card number with a random token that is useless to a thief. Together they keep actual card numbers out of your systems, which lowers your breach risk and simplifies compliance. If your environment never stores raw card data, there is far less for an attacker to steal. ProTech's gateways NMI and Authorize.net build both into the payment flow by default.
What does a data breach cost a small business?
A card data breach can cost a small business far more than the stolen funds. You may face fines, forensic investigation costs, card reissuance charges, and mandatory breach notifications, which together can reach tens of thousands of dollars. There is also lost customer trust, which is harder to measure. Staying PCI compliant and keeping card data out of your systems through tokenization sharply reduces this exposure. ProTech sets up your processing to minimize what is ever at risk.
What are PCI compliance levels?
PCI has four merchant levels based on annual card transaction volume. Level 1 covers the largest merchants, generally over 6 million transactions a year, and requires the most rigorous validation including an external audit. Levels 2 through 4 cover smaller volumes and usually validate through a Self-Assessment Questionnaire. Most small and mid-sized businesses fall into Level 4. ProTech identifies your level and matches you to the right validation path so you are not doing more than your size requires.
